Sondra has created art for Burning Man, Project Storefront Astoria, ARTELPHX, and McMuses Instant Inspiration. She studied sculpture at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec.

Find the HUE

The Hidden Underground Experience is located at 1004 Marine Drive in Astoria, Oregon.

Enter at the corner of 10th Street and Marine Drive, then follow the signs into the Tiny Town Underground.


Get Directions

When to Visit

The HUE is active most days from 11 AM–6 PM, but every shop, studio and restaurant sets its own hours. Hours often change seasonally on the Oregon Coast, so check the individual business links above before making a special trip.

Need Step-Free Access?

The HUE has a wheelchair-accessible entrance and elevator on 10th Street, just past Reliques & Antiquities. The elevator provides access between the building’s levels.

Parking

Two-hour street parking is usually available along Marine Drive and 10th Street. During Sunday Market, festivals and other busy events, you may need to park a little farther away.


Explore the Tiny Town

 Once inside, follow the signs—or simply wander. Explore the shops and studios downstairs, then continue up the back stairs or take the elevator to meet the Top Siders.  


Then head out and explore the 10th and Marine Crossroads. Restaurants, galleries, bars, and spectacular river views are all within a block of the HUE. 

The Man Who Built a Tiny Town Underground

Our History

 Michael Foster had an idea everybody thought was crazy.


In the early 2000s, Foster began transforming the basement of the Sanborn Building at 10th Street and Marine Drive into a recreation of Astoria as it might have appeared in 1890.


A history major at Willamette University and later a graduate student at the University of Oregon, Foster was also a teacher, librarian, art collector and dedicated community volunteer. He envisioned more than a row of basement shops. His plans included historic facades, streetlights, murals, subterranean streets and spaces for businesses, art and public gatherings.


“I wanted to show what Astoria looked like in 1890,” Foster told The Daily Astorian in 2003. He designed the space to be explored throughout the year—including during Astoria’s long rainy season. “This is designed so if it’s raining out, you can still come in here,” he explained.

 Michael Foster also understood the importance of leaving a little mystery. When asked about his plans for one unfinished store, Foster answered simply: “That’s the mystery.”


The project was an enormous undertaking, and Foster admitted there were times when he went home wondering, “Have I made a mistake?” But he continued, believing he was improving a part of Astoria so that everyone could enjoy it.


Foster died in 2016 at the age of 76. His influence can be found throughout Astoria: he played key roles in restoring the Astoria Column and Liberty Theater and in transforming the old Astoria City Hall into the Clatsop County Historical Society’s Heritage Museum.


Today, the Hidden Underground Experience—born of Michael Foster’s original vision—includes immersive and experiential shops, galleries and studios, just as he imagined it.
